Working as a military observer, J-P Peltonen was inspired by U.S. service knives he saw while on tour in Lebanon in 1979. As a further motivator, he heard a Finnish lieutenant colonel based in the harsh conditions of Northern Finland state a new knife was needed, one that would combine a hefty structure, military practicality and everything you need from a wilderness knife in Nordic conditions.

The Sissipuukko is a result of a long development arc. The current model is NATO certified and popular among both professionals and hikers and bushcraft enthusiasts.
