How to choose the right trekking backpack for your needs

Choose the right size category: Larger gear and, for example, the amount of food needed on a long trek require plenty of space, making a roomy trekking backpack the best choice. High-end ultralight gear packs down smaller, meaning a smaller backpack may be sufficient. Don’t underestimate the importance of your gear: depending on your equipment, the same trip might require either a 45- or a 70-liter backpack.
Ultralight or traditional? Ultralight materials reduce the load you carry—an ultralight backpack can weigh half as much as a traditional pack of the same size. The trade-off is reduced abrasion resistance: lighter fabrics are more prone to damage, for example when brushing against branches.
The number and placement of pockets is a matter of preference: the lightest packs have relatively few pockets, while more traditional models include multiple pockets that make organizing your gear easier.
Some backpacks feature a removable top lid pocket, allowing you to leave the main pack at camp while you take a quick side trip, using the lid pocket as a small daypack.
