Backpacking packs
Large backpacks – a hiker’s best companion
How to choose the right trekking backpack for your needs
- Choose the right size category: Larger gear and, for example, the amount of food needed on a long trek require plenty of space, making a roomy trekking backpack the best choice. High-end ultralight gear packs down smaller, meaning a smaller backpack may be sufficient. Don’t underestimate the importance of your gear: depending on your equipment, the same trip might require either a 45- or a 70-liter backpack.
- Ultralight or traditional? Ultralight materials reduce the load you carry—an ultralight backpack can weigh half as much as a traditional pack of the same size. The trade-off is reduced abrasion resistance: lighter fabrics are more prone to damage, for example when brushing against branches.
- The number and placement of pockets is a matter of preference: the lightest packs have relatively few pockets, while more traditional models include multiple pockets that make organizing your gear easier.
- Some backpacks feature a removable top lid pocket, allowing you to leave the main pack at camp while you take a quick side trip, using the lid pocket as a small daypack.
Top brands for the fells and forest trails
Osprey is known for excellent carrying comfort and relatively lightweight products. Deuter offers a wide range of options, from traditional models to lightweight designs. Fjällräven is a favorite for many, with the robust Kajka backpacks continually winning over new satisfied users. Savotta backpacks are built to last, using 500 and 1000 denier Cordura fabrics. Savotta backpacks are manufactured in Finland and Estonia. Lundhags is a reliable choice, offering both very rugged and lightweight models.
Men’s and women’s models
Many manufacturers offer their backpacks in different frame sizes. Depending on the brand, these may be more or less specifically designed for men and women. For example, in Osprey backpacks the shape of the hip belt and shoulder straps, as well as the range of back length adjustment, differ between men’s and women’s models. Fjällräven, on the other hand, uses size options that more directly affect the dimensions of the carrying system rather than its shape.
A quality backpack makes carrying the load easier
A carefully designed backpack allows most of the weight to be carried on the hip belt—bearing the entire load on your shoulders quickly becomes uncomfortable. Ergonomically shaped hip belts and shoulder straps play a major role in overall comfort.
The adjustable back length of a backpack helps ensure a comfortable fit—learning how to properly adjust the straps is well worth it to get the most out of your pack!
