The founders of Xero Shoes, Steven and Lena, are a couple. When Steven decided to return to sprinting at the age of 45, after a 30-year break, he soon found himself in a constant cycle of injuries. He was recommended barefoot running as a form of supportive exercise, and it helped him get rid of his symptoms.
Steven realized he wanted to live barefoot. However, going without shoes in everyday life is challenging - it’s a line few are willing to cross. Initially, prototypes made for personal use in the form of sandals began to attract attention, leading to the idea of a new barefoot shoe brand.
Steven’s spouse, Lena, has a background in hiking. After Steven made prototype sandals for Lena as well, Lena found that barefoot walking helped achieve a more natural stride even while walking.
