Men's Winter jackets and parkas
Men’s winter jackets for cold weather, hiking and everyday wear
Parka
Parkas are a popular choice both on city streets and in extreme cold. Their durable outer fabric shrugs off everyday wear and tear, and the hip length helps keep your body warm. On winter trips, they work well as a jacket for breaks and around camp. A winter parka is also a go-to for dog sledders and anyone travelling with a pulk or snowmobile.
Packable down jackets
A down jacket with a thinner, packable shell fabric fits easily in your rucksack. The lightest down jackets weigh only around 300 grams, yet give you more extra warmth than a 400-gram fleece. In the warmest down jackets, the down lofts into an insulating layer several centimetres thick between your body and the outside air. These are jackets you could take on a polar expedition.
Synthetic insulation handles moisture
On long trips, the down in a down-filled winter jacket can lose some of its insulating ability as it absorbs moisture. If you know you’ll be wearing the jacket in cold, damp conditions with no chance to dry it out along the way, synthetic insulation is the better option.
3-in-1 jacket: three jackets in one
A 3-in-1 jacket is a practical choice for many people. It combines a removable liner jacket with a weatherproof outer shell. You can wear them together or separately.
Bomber jacket
The bomber jacket takes its name from its origins. Aircrews flying at high altitude needed thick, warm clothing. Inspired by those original flight jackets, today’s bomber jackets are waist-length and warm. The short hem works well when a longer one would get in the way while you’re sitting, and the style never really dates.
Lightweight down jacket
Lightweight down jackets took over the market a few years ago, and it’s easy to see why. Warmer than a fleece and windproof too, they barely register when you’re hiking or out walking, yet they’re warm for their weight. Many pack down small when needed, so use one as your break and camp jacket on hikes.
Lightweight padded jacket
A lightweight padded jacket is the down-free alternative. Not everyone wants to support down production, even from the most responsible producers. On the technical side, a padded jacket also copes better with moisture than down.
Anorak
The anorak is a perennial favourite. In winter, a classic anorak goes over base and mid layers chosen to suit the conditions. A winter anorak is a versatile choice with a proper outdoor feel.
Look for a proper hood
A hood that keeps out the wind is invaluable: it makes a surprising difference to how warm you stay. Faux-fur trims are common on parkas. They add extra warmth by breaking up the wind and creating a sheltered pocket of air in front of your face.
Ski jackets
A ski or snowboard jacket can be insulated or uninsulated. An uninsulated jacket works like a hiking shell, with all the warmth in your system coming from your base and mid layers. This type is the most popular choice for freeriding. An insulated jacket, on the other hand, makes it easier to avoid cold spots and is a straightforward choice for everyday piste skiing at resorts.
Oversized winter jackets make a statement
Oversized winter jackets are deliberately designed to be both generously insulated and eye-catching. An oversized jacket turns heads and keeps you warm.
How to choose the right winter jacket
- Looking for an everyday jacket, or a camp jacket for winter treks? An everyday jacket won’t face extreme conditions but will take plenty of regular wear and tear. A winter jacket for the outdoors, by contrast, should pack down small and protect you when the temperature drops well below freezing.
- Think about how cold it needs to handle. Our lightest down and lightly insulated jackets are roughly equivalent to a thick fleece, while our warmest jackets would see you through a polar expedition if needed.
- Choose between down and synthetic insulation. Down packs down small and, cared for properly, is a very durable material. Synthetic fill copes better with moisture.
- Do you need a waterproof winter jacket? Around freezing and in light frost, a waterproof outer fabric is a good idea. In a proper deep freeze, it makes no real difference. Long or short? A longer hem looks striking and adds plenty of extra protection. Then again, a waist-length cut is practical if your winter days involve a lot of sitting down on benches and getting back up again.
