Versatile shelter fabric – the tarp
Canopies previously commonly referred to as shelter cloths are now widely known as “tarps,” also among Finnish outdoor enthusiasts. The name comes from the English word tarpaulin, shortened to tarp. Different models offer different attachment options.
What size should I choose?
The most common tarp size is 3 × 3 meters. It works well for both solo travelers and pairs. Pitching a tarp in an A-frame configuration reduces usable width somewhat, especially if there’s a risk of wind-driven sideways rain. A 4 × 3 or 4 × 4 tarp is already quite large, while a minimalist solo hiker may prefer, for example, a 3 × 2 meter tarp.
