Skiing goggles
Quality eye protection
What on earth does “cat3” mean?
Quality manufacturers indicate the tint level of their lenses using a category system. Cat0 lenses are essentially fully clear, while cat1 lenses help add contrast in dim or very cloudy conditions. A cat2 lens works in overcast weather, cat3 corresponds to average sunglasses, and cat4 is extra dark, so dark that lenses this dark aren’t recommended for use in road traffic, when talkin about sunglasses.
Self-tinting, or photochromic, lenses
Photochromic lenses react to the surrounding conditions, darkening and lightening to suit the situation. A self-tinting lens costs more than a basic one, but it adapts to the lighting conditions. The extremes of these lenses (brightest and darkest) are also expressed using categories, and the tint changes seamlessly.
