It’s a good idea to practice using a liquid stove once or twice before a hike. Remove the fuel bottle cap and replace it with the pump. Connect the stove’s hose to the pump and pump about 10 strokes to give the bottle some pressure. Then let fuel flow into the stove for a couple of seconds and close the valve. Light this priming fuel and wait a moment. When you start to hear a faint hissing sound, it’s a sign that the preheating has been successful, and you can slowly open the valve until the result is a strong, blue flame.
