• 2.5-layer trousers: Ultralight and compact. They have a thin protective layer printed onto the inner surface, and in practice they call for long underwear or leggings underneath.
• Three-layer trousers: The most durable construction, with fabric bonded to both sides of the waterproof membrane. Three-layer shell trousers are a common choice for demanding use such as fell trekking and climbing, including in winter.
