Insulated or shell pants?
Insulated pants are a common sight on the slopes at ski resorts, where you take the lift to the top. Shell pants, on the other hand, allow for ventilation and, worn with thin base layers, also work in situations where you’re skinning up a long ascent on a backcountry excursion.
What’s the difference between ordinary shell trousers and shell trousers made for skiing? Ski trousers always have very roomy leg openings, so that ski boots reaching high up the shin fit inside them. They usually also have snow gaiters. The materials are sturdier than in ordinary shell trousers, because ski trousers easily take a beating and weight doesn’t play quite as critical a role as it does in hiking use, for example.
