Men’s merino wool base layers are made from materials of varying thicknesses. When the fabric weight is, say, 160g/m², the garment is pleasantly light, while models suited to winter use may have a fabric weight of around 220g/m². A proper thermal base layer performs even in hard frost!
When choosing a merino wool base layer top, it’s worth thinking about how high a collar you want: a merino wool turtleneck offers good protection when needed, while a low collar works well if your other layers have generous collars. Some models have long cuffs with thumbholes — this kind of design also protects your wrists well. Merino wool base layer bottoms often feature a flat waistband, so that the hip belt of a rucksack, for example, doesn’t press uncomfortably.
A moisture-wicking, breathable base layer should fit close to the skin — this way it can move moisture onward. A base layer top and bottoms that fit snugly but without pinching keep you comfortable.
