High-pile fleece
High-pile fleeces — jackets and shirts made from very long-pile fleece — trap a great deal of air. They are thicker than, say, a heavy wool jumper, and in layering they work best with relatively roomy outer jackets.
Merino wool
Merino wool’s success story continues on the mid-layer side too. Wool has only become more comfortable over the years as ever finer wool grades have reached consumers. The scales of merino wool are very small, and merino garments don’t itch even for most people with sensitive skin. Merino wool’s ability to dry on the wearer without leaving them cold has made it hugely popular across many outdoor pursuits.
Part of a layering system
A mid layer turns a shell jacket and trousers into a year-round garment. Where in summer you wear a thin technical base layer under the shell, in winter you add a warmer base layer plus a mid layer. In really hard frost, you may also need extra insulation over the mid layer in the form of a down jacket and trousers.
Hood or no hood?
Mid-layer shirts and jackets are made both with and without a hood. A hood adds a surprising amount of warmth by preventing air from moving around your neck and head. On the other hand, with some jackets the hood can be an awkward extra bundle at your neck when you’re not using it.
Other details
Whether you need pockets in a mid layer is a matter of opinion and depends partly on how you use it. The more the mid-layer jacket sees casual, everyday wear, the more useful the pockets are. If the mid layer always sits under a shell jacket, its pockets easily go unused.
