Choosing the right size of hiking shoes and boots

When choosing hiking boots, getting the right size matters. This guide explains how to find hiking boots that fit you properly.

A boot that's too small pinches uncomfortably and leaves no room for proper socks. In a boot that's too big, your foot slides around inside, which can lead to blisters and lost toenails on descents.

Many hikers use a two-sock system with their boots: a thin liner sock first, with a hiking sock over the top. Merino wool is a good choice for hiking socks. It doesn't feel cold even when damp, and airing it out is usually enough to get rid of odours.

So your boots can be noticeably bigger than the shoes you wear day to day. Leave room inside for two pairs of socks, but make sure the boot still holds your foot securely. Pay attention to the width of the last too – our hiking boots come on lasts of different widths.

Choosing your boot size in our stores

If you're buying boots in one of our stores, ask one of our outdoor experts to help. With their advice, it's easier to find the right boot and the right size.

Your feet swell over the course of the day, so it's best to try on boots later in the day, once they already have. Bring your own hiking socks if you like – we also have socks you can borrow in store. Give yourself plenty of time for the fitting.

Lace the boots up properly and take your time walking around the store in them. Make use of any stairs or boot-testing ramps too. If the boot presses anywhere, even slightly, it's a sign that it doesn't suit your foot or is the wrong size.

Choosing your boot size online

You can also buy hiking boots from our online store. If you do, read the product description carefully and check the size chart closely. Make sure you know which sizing the boot uses (UK, EU, US men's or US women's).

Put on the socks you plan to wear with the boots. Measure both feet standing up, with your heel against a wall. Place something like a book at the tip of your longest toe and measure the distance to the wall.

Use the measurement of your longer foot and find the closest match in the size chart. Toe room is already built into the boot, so you don't need to add any extra.
