Pegs (also known as stakes)

Our tent accessory selection includes a variety of tent pegs. There are several types, but they share one common feature: the material is almost always aluminum. There are a few exceptions, for example, Hilleberg Stinger pegs are made of tough titanium. Rod-like narrow pegs work best in firm ground. V-profile pegs are excellent for soft ground, and Y-profile pegs work well in almost any condition. Additionally, a few manufacturers offer large specialty pegs for snow and sand. Depending on the situation, such a peg can either be pushed into the ground like a regular peg or buried horizontally, for example in snow. When using the latter method, it’s important to create a direct channel in the snow for the tent guyline. If the line presses against the snowbank wall rather than running directly to the tent, the peg’s holding power weakens considerably, and the line will likely loosen during the night.

Tips for setup

Even in harsh weather, only anchor the tent using its designated attachment points. The tent’s flexibility is part of its durability. If you force the tent into place with extra ropes or lines, it cannot move properly in strong gusts, which may lead to damage.

If you plan to head into windy fells or archipelagos, it’s a good habit to always secure the tent fully every time.

In winter conditions, the tent can be partially dug into the snow or have a protective snow wall built around it.

In case of damage:

If the tent is damaged, you can get new poles or individual pole sections. Fabric repairs are often possible as well. The type of fabric affects how easy it is to repair: polyurethane-coated fabrics used in more affordable tents are easier to patch as adhesive patches stick well. Silicone-treated fabrics are much slipperier and require special patches – check the product details to see if repair is possible for the specific item.
