Handheld GPS:s are waterproof and rugged - made to stand the sort of regular outdoor use your smartphone would just hate. Garmin GPS:s have been tried and tested in both hobby and professional use.
The most affordable base models don't have a map function. They are, however, just as precise in locating you and just as weatherproof and rugged as the more expensive models.
