On long trips, the down in a down-filled parka may lose its insulating ability as it absorbs moisture. Especially if you know you will be using the coat in cold and damp conditions without the chance to dry it, synthetic insulation is a better option.
A 3-in-1 or combination jacket is a convenient choice for many. Such a jacket has a removable inner jacket and a weatherproof outer jacket. These can be used both together and separately.
A wind-protective hood is indispensable: it provides incredible warmth and helps keep the weather out. In parka jackets, a fur or faux fur trim on the hood helps maintain warmth further by dampening the wind and creating a "protective barrier" against the chill in front of the face.
