Mid layer and fleece jackets
Mid-layer fleece jackets and shirts
Fleece
High-loft fleece
High-loft fleeces, meaning products made from very long-pile fleece, trap a great deal of air. They are thicker than, for example, chunky wool sweaters, and in layered clothing they work best with relatively roomy outer jackets.
Merino wool
Merino wool’s rise continues on the mid-layer side too. The comfort of wool has only improved over the years as ever finer grades of wool have become available to consumers. The scales on merino wool are very small, and merino garments don’t itch, even for most people with sensitive skin. A merino garment’s ability to dry on your body in a controlled way, without leaving you cold, has made them hugely popular in many outdoor activities.
Part of layered clothing
A mid-layer turns a shell jacket and trousers into year-round clothing. Where in summer use you have a thin technical base layer under the shell, in winter you add a warmer base layer plus a mid-layer. In really hard frost you may also need to add extra insulation on top of the mid-layer in the form of a down jacket and trousers.
Hooded or not?
Mid-layer shirts and jackets come both with and without a hood. A hood adds surprisingly much warmth to your outfit by preventing air movement around your neck and head. On the flip side, with some jackets a hood can be an awkward extra bundle at your neck when you’re not using it.
Other details
Whether a mid-layer needs pockets is a matter of opinion and depends partly on the intended use. The more a mid-layer jacket sees casual, everyday wear, the more useful pockets are. But if the mid-layer is always under a shell jacket, its pockets easily go unused.
