Choose a merino wool layer to suit your needs
Merino wool base layers come in different thicknesses. When the fabric weight is around 160 g/m², the garment is pleasantly light, while models suited to winter use may have a fabric weight of about 220 g/m². A proper thermal base layer works even in hard frost!
When choosing a merino wool base layer top, it’s worth thinking about how high a collar you want: a merino wool turtleneck gives good protection when you need it, while a low collar works well if your other layers have generous collars. Some models have long cuffs with thumb holes — this design also protects your wrists well. Merino wool base layer bottoms often have a flat waistband, so that the hip belt of a backpack, for example, doesn’t press uncomfortably.
A moisture-wicking, breathable base layer should fit close to the skin — that way it can move moisture onward. A top and bottoms that fit snugly but without pinching keep you comfortable. In our selection you’ll find base layer bottoms, tops, bras and other base layer garments.
