The stiffness of the ski is selected based on both your weight and skill level. A strong, experienced skier with good technique benefits from a different ski than someone who skis occasionally for leisure. This is good news for beginners and hobbyists, as the skis that give them the best performance, are less expensive than race skis.

For classic skis, the length is about 20–25 cm longer than the skier’s height, while skate skis are about 5–15 cm longer than the skier’s height.

Bindings have evolved: nowadays, nearly all bindings for track skiing are compatible with Rottefella NNN and Salomon Prolink systems. These standards work perfectly together.
