Women's winter shoes
Women’s winter shoes and winter boots for Nordic conditions
For the cold or for slush?
Waterproof winter shoes work especially well in the often wet winter weather of southern Finland. The amount of insulation in winter shoes or boots also varies depending on the conditions: a brisk walk calls for less lining and padding than, say, an ice-fishing trip or hanging out by the edge of a skating rink.
Studs for safer winter outings
Women’s studded shoes have come a long way - Icebug leads the market, with Salomon and Pomar following close behind. Studded shoes grip best on ice and cut down slips dramatically. Just remember that studs have their limits too: if there’s snow on the ice or the ice is very uneven, the studs won’t reach it - on a surface like that, only crampons would grip!
Grip-sole shoes: a lighter option
Grip-sole shoes are shoes whose sole material is made specifically for winter use. Where the soles of many hiking and sports shoes harden and turn incredibly slippery in the cold, the rubber sole of grip-sole shoes stays soft. They often also have separate grip elements made from special materials. Grip-sole shoes hold better in winter conditions than ordinary shoes, but walking in them still calls for more care than walking in studded shoes.
