Reliable, legendary, and as a bonus, whisper quiet. Bottle included.

The powerful and reliable MSR Whisperlite burns white gas and kerosene/diesel. True to its name, the Whisperlite is relatively quiet for a multi-fuel stove: where many gasoline stoves roar or loudly hiss, the Whisperlite gently whispers.

The Whisperlite belongs to the manufacturer’s “Cook” product category, meaning it’s at its best when you need to bring water to a boil quickly, with moderate capacity for power adjustment. If you need very precise flame control for longer cooking sessions, we recommend the manufacturer’s “Simmer” series instead, such as the Dragonfly stove.

Liquid fuel stoves like this are a popular choice especially for winter use. Where alcohol stoves lack sufficient power and gas canisters struggle in freezing temperatures, the fuels used by the Whisperlite are unfazed by the cold, and you can manually pump extra pressure into the stove.

  • Burns white gas, light fuel oil/diesel, and unleaded gasoline
  • The Shaker Jet nozzle is cleaned simply by shaking: a needle inside the stove scrapes soot away
  • Packs down into a compact size
  • What’s in the box: Stove and fuel hose
  • 0.59 L fuel bottle
  • Fuel pump
  • Wind screen and heat reflector for under the stove
  • Instruction manual

Manufacturer-stated boil times and fuel consumption:

  • White gas: 1 liter of water boils in 3.5 minutes; one full fuel bottle boils 25 liters of water; 1 deciliter boils 4.4 liters; one bottle provides 110 minutes of stove use at full power
  • Kerosene/diesel): 1 liter of water boils in 4.5 minutes; one full fuel bottle boils 34 liters of water; 1 deciliter boils 5.3 liters; one bottle provides 155 minutes of stove use at full power

Note! These figures were tested in summer conditions with an initial water temperature of 21°C. Colder water, let alone thawing snow and then boiling it, takes much longer and consumes more fuel per amount of water boiled.

It’s a good idea to practice using a stove like this a few times before relying on it in real situations. Assemble the stove, remove the bottle cap and replace it with the fuel pump. Connect the pump to the stove’s hose. Pump pressure into the bottle, let fuel flow into the stove for a couple of seconds, close the valve, and ignite the fuel with an open flame. Note! At this stage the flame is large and unruly. Once the priming fuel has done its job, you’ll hear a faint hissing sound. This means the fuel is vaporizing. Now you can open the valve, and the result is a strong, blue flame suitable for cooking.
