Most of the time it doesn’t rain — so many outdoor people make the most of good weather with comfortable trekking trousers that aren’t waterproof. Trekking trousers in particular are excellent at letting sweat out into the open air compared to shell garments.
Which material should I choose?
Cotton-polyester withstands wear and feels pleasant against the skin, wadmal is a traditional and highly wear-resistant choice, and technical fabrics offer the best breathability and stretch for active pursuits.
- Cotton-polyester:Sasta, Fjällräven, Pinewood and other outdoor clothing brands use a blend of cotton and polyester in many trekking trousers. These fabrics breathe well, dry quickly and age with style. You can treat them with wax, giving the fabric excellent wind resistance, a slight water-repellency and better durability against wear too. Since cotton-polyester is comfortable even directly against the skin in dry conditions, its range of use is very broad: cotton-polyester suits a cool summer evening just as well as brisk activity in light frost, as long as you wear either a technical or merino wool base layer underneath.
- Wadmal contains plenty of wool. Sasta’s wadmal garments are a favourite for many in cool and cold conditions. Wadmal is warm, quiet, breathable, evens out temperature swings and resists odours. Quality wadmal stays in good shape year after year.
- Technical fabrics are durable and many of them stretch with your movements too. Some technical fabrics feel tolerable against the skin even when slightly damp. Haglöfs’ Climatic fabrics in particular are very popular, and for good reason.
