8 Reasons to Choose Wool

In Finland, it’s common to see people wearing wool clothing. Most of us likely own at least one wool sweater, beanie, or pair of wool socks. Wool products are well-suited for Finnish weather conditions—especially for hiking and outdoor activities. Here are 8 reasons why you should choose wool.

1. Wool is a Renewable and Responsible Material

Wool is an ecological, renewable material that biodegrades naturally. Of course, wool doesn’t contain any synthetic plastic compounds.

At Scandinavian Outdoor, all our wool products come from responsible manufacturers. The producers of our merino wool products have also been carefully selected. All the merino wool clothing we sell is made from wool sourced from mulesing-free farms—meaning the mulesing method has not been used.

2. Wool Feels Warm Even When Damp

Wool performs excellently in a wide range of weather conditions, from freezing cold to damp and wet. Even when slightly wet, wool still feels warm and maintains its insulating properties. Wool naturally wicks moisture away from the skin, making merino wool base and mid layers ideal for outdoor use.

3. Wool Has Natural Antibacterial Properties

Wool has inherent antibacterial qualities that help prevent odors. This is especially desirable for items like socks and base layers.

4. Wool Products Are Easy to Keep Clean

Thanks to their antibacterial nature, wool garments are easy to keep fresh. Usually, simple airing is enough—washing is only needed for stain removal.

5. Wool is Not Easily Flammable

Anyone who has singed a lightweight down jacket or shell at a campfire knows the risk. Wool is much less flammable and doesn’t easily get burn holes. Many types of wool have an ignition point above 500°C.

6. Wool Breathes Well

Wool garments make excellent mid-layers, keeping you warm while moving. Wool also works as an outer layer when there’s no strong wind.

Wool breathes effectively, making it suitable even for sweaty activities in cold weather. A little snowfall isn’t a problem either—snow on your sweater simply melts from your body heat.

7. Wool Products Work Year-Round

Wool adapts well to different temperatures. Especially merino wool garments can be worn all year. In warmer weather, just opt for a lighter merino wool fabric.

8. Wool Looks Beautiful

Wool garments aren’t just great for outdoor use—they also look fantastic! A beautiful wool sweater adds cozy warmth, even on a grey day.
