Hiking pants

Durable and breathable materials with plenty of pocket space – hiking pants remain popular year after year. These pants are made either from cotton-polyester blends or fully synthetic fabrics, and they don’t feel as stiff as some shell garments. If desired, you can treat your hiking pants with a water-repellent agent, which gives them a light level of water resistance.

Perfect for Dry Weather

Most of the time it doesn’t rain – so many outdoor enthusiasts make the most of good weather with comfortable, non-waterproof hiking pants. Especially when it comes to breathability, hiking pants excel compared to shell layers, letting sweat evaporate easily.

Which material should I choose?

Polyester cotton: Sasta, Fjällräven, Pinewood, and many other outdoor clothing brands use poly cotton blends in many of their hiking pants. These fabrics breathe well, dry quickly, and age gracefully. They can be treated with wax, which makes the fabric highly wind-resistant, slightly water-repellent, and more durable against wear. Since polyester cotton is comfortable even directly against the skin in dry conditions, its range of use is very wide: poly cotton works just as well on a cool summer evening as it does for active use in light sub-zero temperatures, as long as you wear either a technical or merino wool base layer underneath.
Wool fabrics are a classic choice. Sasta’s wool blend garments are a favorite choice for many in cool and cold conditions. Wool blend fabric is warm, quiet, breathable, regulates temperature changes, and resists odors. High-quality wool blends will look tidy year after year.
Technical fabrics are durable, and many of them also stretch to move with your body. Some technical fabrics feel comfortable against the skin even when slightly damp. Haglöfs’ Climatic fabrics in particular are extremely popular—and for good reason.

A Versatile Choice

Like many comfortable outdoor products, hiking pants have also found their way into everyday wear. There’s a wide range of colors – go bold with eye-catching combinations or keep it subtle with something like black.

Traditional and Modern Styles

The most traditional hiking pants are made entirely from cotton-polyester blends. A modern update adds stretch panels – for example, the Fjällräven Keb or Pinewood Caribou. Even small stretch panels can significantly improve freedom of movement. Pants made entirely from synthetic fibers, like the Haglöfs Rugged series, are extremely durable and feel pleasant against the skin even when slightly damp.
