Insulated or shell pants?
Women’s ski pants come in two forms: insulated and shell. Fairly thin, shell pants are the choice of many backcountry skiers, as they offer the best possible adjustability when it comes to warmth. Insulated ski pants are the default type for regular on-piste action. Padded, or insulated, skiing pants are right at home on regular ski slopes where you use a lift to get back up the hill.
What’s the difference between regular shell pants and shell pants made for skiing? Ski pants always have very roomy leg openings so that boots reaching high up the shin fit inside them. They also usually have snow gaiters. The materials are sturdier than those of regular shell pants because ski pants easily take a beating, and weight doesn’t play quite as critical a role as it does in hiking, for example.
