High-loft fleece
Fuzzy high-loft fleeces, meaning garments made from very long-pile fleece, trap a great deal of air. They are thicker than, for example, chunky wool jumpers, and work best in a layering system with relatively roomy outer jackets.
Merino wool
The rise of merino wool continues on the mid layer side too. The comfort of wool has only improved over the years as ever finer wool grades have become available to consumers. The scales of merino wool are very small, so merino garments don’t itch, even for most people with sensitive skin. A merino garment’s ability to dry on the wearer in a controlled way, without leaving you cold, has made them hugely popular in many outdoor pursuits.
Part of the layering system
A mid layer turns a shell jacket and trousers into a year-round garment. Where in summer you wear a thin technical base layer under the shell, in winter you add a warmer base layer plus a mid layer. In really hard frosts you may also need extra insulation over the mid layer in the form of a down jacket and trousers.
Hood or no hood?
Mid layer tops and jackets come both with and without hoods. A hood adds a surprising amount of warmth by stopping air from moving around your neck and head. On the flip side, with some jackets an unused hood can be an awkward extra lump at the back of your neck.
Other details
Whether a mid layer needs pockets is a matter of opinion and partly depends on how you use it. The more a mid layer jacket sees casual, everyday wear, the more useful pockets are. But if the mid layer is always under a shell jacket, its pockets easily go unused.
