A super thick self-inflatable mat for down to freezing point and a bit below.
The Trail Pro Max is the choice for those who value comfort. When self-inflating pads first came onto the market years ago, no one would have even dreamed of a self-inflating pad this thick!
Even so, for most users ready to sacrifice a bit of weight for a good night of sleep, it’s not too overly heavy. Since the pad’s insulation is generous (its R-value is 4.4), it’s a carefree choice for three-season use and also works in light sub-zero temperatures.
When you arrive at camp, take the Trail Pro Max out of its stuff sack, open the valve and let the foam return to its shape – this way the pad draws in almost all the air it needs by itself. Once the pad has done its job, you can blow in a little extra air and close the valve.
- MAX model: traditional, rectangular, non-tapered
- Regular Wide: normal length, wider than average
- StrataCore construction and a stretchy surface fabric enhance comfort
- The WingLock valve lets air flow three times faster than Thermarest’s previous valve
- The fabrics are solution-dyed, which saves water and reduces the energy use and chemical load of production
- A roomier-at-one-end stuff sack with a compression strap makes packing easy
When packing the pad, open the valve and start rolling it from the foot end. Give the mat time; don’t press it too hard if it feels like the air isn’t escaping as fast as you’d like.
At home, the best way to store a self-inflating mat is unrolled with the valve open, for example under a bed. This way the foam retains its loft and the mat performs at its best in camp.
The one liter Nalgene bottle in the packing size image is there to give scale, it is not included in the price. Why not buy one, though.
