Shoes and Boots for Nordic Winters

The lightest winter shoes in our selection are padded ankle boots, while the sturdiest winter boots are robust “Canada Boots” or felt-lined rubber boots. Winter boots suitable for extreme cold often feature removable felt liners, which should be taken out to dry at the end of a long day.

For Frost or Slush?

Waterproof winter footwear is especially useful in the often wet winter conditions of southern Finland. The amount of insulation in winter shoes or boots also varies depending on use: a lighter lining is sufficient for brisk walks, while ice fishing or standing around at the skating rink requires more insulation and padding.

Studs for Safer Winter Outings

Studded shoes have come a long way—Icebug leads the market, with Salomon and Pomar close behind. Studded shoes offer the best grip on ice and significantly reduce the risk of slipping. Keep in mind that even studs have their limits: if there is snow on the ice or the surface is very uneven, the studs may not reach the ice. In such cases, only crampons will provide proper grip!
