Winter shoes
Winter shoes and winter boots for Nordic conditions
Frost or slush?
Waterproof winter shoes work especially well in the often wet winter conditions of southern Finland. The amount of insulation in winter shoes and boots also varies with the conditions of use: a brisk walk calls for less lining and padding than, say, a day of ice fishing or hanging around by the skating rink.
Studs add safety to winter outings
Studded shoes have come a long way - Icebug leads the market, with Salomon and Pomar following close behind. Studded shoes grip ice best of all and cut down on slips significantly. Remember that even studs have their limits: if there’s snow on the ice or the ice is very bumpy, the studs won’t reach the ice - on a surface like that, only crampons would grip!
Grip-sole shoes: a lighter option
Grip-sole shoes are shoes with a sole material made specifically for winter use. Where the sole material of many hiking and sports shoes hardens in the cold and turns incredibly slippery, the rubber sole of grip-sole shoes stays soft. They often have separate grip elements too, made with special materials. Grip-sole shoes hold better than ordinary shoes in winter conditions, but walking in them calls for a more careful approach than walking in studded shoes.
