Guide to choosing a torch

A torch earns its place during the dark months of the year. A modern LED torch is small but powerful, slips easily into a jacket pocket, and you can recharge it on the trail with a power bank.

The difference between a torch and a head torch is simple: a head torch points wherever you're looking, while a handheld torch lets you aim the beam freely around you. That makes the two a good pairing. Use the head torch for close-range light and the torch for throwing light into the distance.

A powerful torch often comes in handy in the car, at the cabin or on the boat. It also makes navigating through a dark forest a lot easier.

A torch works well alongside a head torch. The head torch lights up the ground right where you're about to step, while the torch lets you see further ahead and find your way.

What to consider when choosing a torch:

  • Enough light output
  • Beam angle and adjustability
  • Battery life and charging port
  • Impact resistance and waterproofing
  • Size and weight

Light output, or more precisely luminous flux, is measured in lumens. In practice, though, don't fixate on lumens alone. When you're shining light far into the dark, the width of the beam matters too. A wide beam works well for close-range light but won't reach very far. A torch with an adjustable beam is more versatile, but not everyone needs one.

Batteries and battery life vary from model to model. A higher-capacity battery lasts longer, but the most powerful torches can still drain it quickly. Rechargeable torches differ as well: some have the charging port on the battery itself, others on the body of the torch. The connector may be the newer USB-C or the older Micro USB.

If you're taking your torch hiking, you'll want it to be impact-resistant and waterproof. Otherwise a single drop or a downpour can leave it useless. On the trail, keeping size and weight down is a bonus too. For use around the house, features like longer battery life tend to matter more.
