Outdoor Clothing in Generous Sizes: Plus Sizes and D-Sizing

We stock a wide range of generously sized outdoor and hiking clothing. Our outdoor expert Johanna explains plus-size and D-fit clothing.

Johanna works as an outdoor and hiking expert at our Kuninkoja store in Raisio. She has been hiking and trekking since childhood, and she still spends most of her free time out in nature. Johanna is also one of the hiking experts behind our guides.

What's the difference between D-fit and plus size?

D-fit means the garment is cut for a fuller figure. Some of the brands we stock offer D-fit clothing. In women's trousers, for example, a D38 is roomier through the hips and thighs than a standard size 38.
Plus size usually refers to clothing made in a wider size range than is standard. In women's clothing, that typically means sizes above 46 or XL; in men's clothing, sizes above XXL.
On size labels, though, the terms D-fit and plus size are often used interchangeably. In practice, a 42+ is usually the same as a D42.

How do you find generously sized clothing that fits you?

Bodies vary a lot, and two people who wear the same size can be completely different shapes. So not every generously cut garment will suit every larger or curvier person. If you're struggling to find the right fit, ask one of our staff for help – we've usually seen the clothes we sell on all kinds of body shapes.

If your size isn't particularly large, but you struggle to find trousers that fit at the top without being too long, short-leg trousers could be the answer! Many hiking and shell trousers come in a short version.

Some garments come in the same size as a regular fit, a short version and a plus size (many Halti products, for example). If your size is available in more than one version, try them all. The plus size might suit you better in one garment and the regular size in another. You might also need a plus size in the jacket and a regular size in the trousers, or the other way round.

Generously sized women's outdoor and hiking clothing

The Sasta Aava range includes a very popular generously sized hiking jacket.

Our own range includes Sasta Aava+. The jacket in particular has been very popular, and the cut works well. It sits nicely on the shoulders across a wide range of body shapes, and the hem falls loosely. The trousers are honest, no-nonsense hiking trousers made from durable polycotton – a traditional, low-maintenance material for outdoor clothing. They're roomy through the hips and thighs, making them a good fit if you have curvier hips and fuller thighs. The Aava range comes in sizes 38+ – 58+.

Sasta Aura+ waterproof Gore-Tex hiking jacket and trousers.

Sasta Hilla+ are slightly more technical hiking trousers with added stretch. Sizes 38+ – 52+. Sasta Aura+ is a set built for demanding treks, with a Gore-Tex Performance membrane – something you'll rarely find elsewhere in this size range. Sizes 38+ – 56+.

Halti Pallas Warm+ is a roomy women's softshell jacket.

Popular plus-size ranges from Halti: Pallas+, Pallas Warm+, Caima+, Fort+ and more. Halti also makes proper ski trousers and jackets, insulated trousers and cross-country ski wear in women's plus sizes! Sizes usually go up to around 50.

Rukka offers outdoor and cross-country ski sets in D-fit, as well as its popular lightly insulated sets.
The Raiski R+ range includes plenty of popular summer clothing. Sizes up to around 50 or 54.

Marmot Minimalist Plus jacket with a Gore-Tex Paclite membrane. Sizes XL–XXXL, but these are cut generously and come up larger than standard sizes.

A wide size range, though not strictly +/D-fit: selected Helly Hansen and Didriksons insulated and autumn jackets, up to size 52 or 5XL, for example.

Some regular-fit garments are also cut in a way that suits fuller and curvier figures better than others. Among Haglöfs clothing, for example, the Astral GTX jacket works for many curvier women, and the largest size in both the jacket and the Astral trousers is a relatively roomy XXL (roomier than in many other Haglöfs models). Almost all of Jack Wolfskin's women's styles come in XXL, which is roughly a European size 46–48.

Generously sized men's outdoor and hiking clothing

Unfortunately, there are slightly fewer D/+ styles available for men.

The Sasta Luosto+ jacket is designed with a larger waist measurement. Finally, a proper outdoor jacket that doesn't pull tight. Sizes up to XXXXL. Sasta Taival+ trousers in polycotton, sizes 50+ – 60+

Marmot Minimalist Big jacket – a generously cut Gore-Tex Paclite shell jacket in roomy sizes XL–XXXXL. Marmot Precip Eco Big rain jacket, also in roomy sizes XL–XXXL.

From Pinewood, the Caribou TX D Pant are D-fit hiking trousers. Sizes go up to D116, which sounds cryptic, but simply means a more generously cut size 58. Just halve the size number in your head.

Jack Wolfskin's Men’s Fierce Wind Parka and many of their other winter jackets come in a roomy XXXL.

Halti, Rukka, Jack Wolfskin and Didriksons offer many of their jackets in sizes up to at least XXXL, and plenty of other brands have at least some styles in these sizes. They're usually not D-fit, though. Jack Wolfskin often has the best jackets and fleeces for a larger waist. Marmot jackets also tend to be fairly roomy around the waist, although sizes normally only go up to XXL.

Regular-fit XXL clothing comes in quite a range of cuts that suit different body types, so ask our staff for help! Leg length is worth considering too: with a short-leg version, many people can go up a size and get trousers that fit better.
