PIKE – THE CUNNING RULER OF THE WATER

Nicknamed the water wolf and the bog dog, the pike has been cast in the role of a predator in folklore and stories. It was regarded as a thief whose skill and speed of attack were in a class of their own. The pike was seen as an omen of death, and badly behaved young men ended up in its gut.

The pike is a mythical ruler of the water, living beneath the surface. According to belief, it had access to the underworld and carried sick souls to Tuonela, the land of the dead. The pike hunts strategically and cunningly – so it symbolises strength, cunning, determination and the ability to adapt.

The pike plays a major role in the Kalevala – who among us doesn’t remember the tale of how Väinämöinen made a kantele from the pike’s jawbone, whose music enchanted all of creation?
