THE PIKE – CUNNING RULER OF THE WATERS

Dubbed the “water wolf” and “bog dog,” the pike has assumed the role of a beast in tradition and folklore. It has been regarded as a thief, possessing a skill and speed of attack that are in a league of their own. The pike was seen as an omen of death, and wayward youths were said to end up in its belly.

The pike is a mythical ruler of the waters, dwelling beneath the surface. According to belief, it had access to the Underworld and carried sick souls to Tuonela. The pike hunts strategically and cunningly—symbolizing strength, cunning, determination, and adaptability.

The pike plays a major role in the Kalevala—who among us does not remember the story of how Väinämöinen fashioned a kantele from a pike’s jawbone, the playing of which enchanted all of creation?
