The new, 9 cm thick Ultra 8R takes advantage of Exped’s Synmat Pro technology. Adding to Synmat technology, the Pro structure involves not just synthetic insulation that prevents air from circulating, in addition there’s a layer that reflects body heat back to the user. The R-value of the pad is a 7.9, making it warm enough for winter use. The lowest using temperature recommended by the manufacturer is -40ºC.

- Tapered “Mummy” model, 165 grams lighter than the square shape version
- Filled with 160g/m² Expedloft synthetic fiber
- The surface fabric is a 20 denier ripstop
A Schnozzel pump bag is included to fill the pad without the need for blowing. Blowing would draw moisture into the pad and the use of a pump bag reduces fainting.
The three Exped sleeping pad product families, briefly described: Ultra: the lightest surface fabrics, small pack size. Versa: the basic model suitable for versatile use. Dura: reinforced bottom fabric for demanding conditions or frequent use. The number next to the letter R indicates insulation: it is the rounded R-value. 1: for summer use, 2–3: for three-season use, 4 and above: also suitable for winter use.
