A protective pad to be used under your actual sleeping pad.
The Evazote pad, measuring 200 x 100 cm and 4 mm thick, offers some protection for your main sleeping pad against sharp objects, while also shielding the tent floor from wear and tear or, for example, a relatively small dog’s claws. Its width is roughly equivalent to two traditional sleeping pads.
The pad has an R-value of 1.2. When used on its own, a 4 mm thick pad is not recommended for most applications. However, when combined with other pads, this R-value becomes useful: as long as the other pad provides at least some insulation, the R-value of this foam pad (made of ethylene-vinyl acetate) can be fairly directly added to the R-value of the other pad.
Note: It’s difficult to guarantee complete protection — since this is a foam material, in a particularly unlucky situation, an object could still puncture through the pad.
