By using the included striker on the magnesium stick, you can create a proper shower of sparks with a little practice. Sparks easily catch on a good quality kindling, more difficult materials require both practice and several repetitions. The sparks also light a gas stove flame quite easily.

Magnesium fire starters work even if you somehow ended taking a dip in a lake with your clothes on, with the fire starter in your pocket: they do not require protection from moisture.

The correct technique is a combination of appropriate speed and force. A common beginner’s mistake is to scratch quickly and gently like a match. On the other hand, pressing really hard can break the fire starter, so start lightly and increase the force until the job starts to go smoothly. The speed of the stroke is close to that of carving a shaving off a piece of wood.
