Ortlieb, the pioneer of waterproof bags and backpacks

Ortlieb is a German manufacturer that got its start in 1981 when Hartmut Ortlieb, who was on a rainy bike tour, noticed that his panniers were letting rainwater into his gear. The tarpaulins of passing trucks seemed to keep their cargo protected even in the heaviest rain.

As soon as he got home, Hartmut started sewing test versions of the perfect side bag, using tarpaulin.
