Long walks day hikes and weekenders are no problem with the Explorer Mid, regardless of whether you’re walking on rock, asphalt, sand or mud. The upper is made of embossed leather, while the mouth is surrounded by soft textile.
In the so-called ABCD classification system, the Explorer Mid hits class A/B, meaning that these shoes are between sneakers and rigid hiking boots in terms of stiffness and support. For most users, they’re perfect for relatively easy trails.
Unlike with many other hiking shoes in this class, the soles of the Explorer Mid can be replaced if you wear them through.

A polyurethane midsole can take years of use, if you use your shoes often enough. You don’t want to leave your shoes unused for months at a time: even short walks every few weeks help prevent hydrolysis.
The leather upper benefits from maintenance; you’ll want to buy a bottle of Nikwax Leather & Suede with the shoes, and apply it when needed.
