Joutsen – Everyday Luxury
Joutsen down jackets are always stylish and high-quality. The premium down filling keeps you warm, and the quality craftsmanship ensures the product lasts for many years of use.
Finnish Design, Uncompromising Quality Control
Joutsen’s Finnish designers and pattern makers work with years of professional experience. The garments, designed to suit Nordic taste and style, will serve you well for a long time. During product development, the jackets are even examined with a thermal camera to eliminate any potential cold spots.
Since 1936
Marius Pedersen got the idea for industrial down cleaning while watching his wife Saima wash feathers in the couple’s sauna kettle. What began as a hobby soon grew into a business that employed the entire family. The company was named Suomen Höyhen (“Finnish Feather”). In 2005, the company’s name was changed to Joutsen Finland.
Responsibility
Joutsen products are always made from ethically produced goose down, obtained as a by-product of the food industry. Every batch of down can be traced back to the specific farm it came from.
Joutsen also offers washing and repair services: if your jacket gets damaged or the zipper breaks, it can be fixed for a small cost. If you manage to wear your jacket out completely, Joutsen will take it back to recover any usable materials. A typical recycled Joutsen jacket has been in use for about twenty years.
Top-Class Manufacturing Process
Joutsen cleans its down exceptionally thoroughly. Many people who react to ordinary down can use Joutsen products without any problems. While many manufacturers use down washed only once, Joutsen’s cleaning process in Finland and Estonia includes two dust-removal rounds in addition to the main wash. All down used by Joutsen is goose down, which does not smell even when wet.
Some down products leak fine feathers—Joutsen’s down contains no so-called quilled elements, which practically eliminates this issue. Technical wadding is used only in a few carefully selected areas of Joutsen jackets to keep the down in place where it tends to shift, such as on the shoulders. Every single Joutsen jacket is also weighed to ensure consistent quality and to verify that each one has received the precise amount of down intended.
The fabrics used in Joutsen jackets are chosen based on longevity and performance: if two competing fabrics exist—one made of new polyester offering a longer lifespan, and the other recycled but less durable—Joutsen will choose the more durable option. Long product life is a key aspect of sustainability.
