Background

The brand was founded by Helly Juell Hansen in 1877. Together with his wife, he began producing oilskin jackets, sou’westers, and tarpaulins. The very next year, the company was awarded a diploma for excellence at the Paris World Expo, and exports began soon after.

Ongoing Product Development

Helly Hansen has continuously developed new materials: the Helox plastic film introduced in 1949 protected users from water and was a lighter alternative to earlier materials. The LIFA fabric, still used in base layers today, was developed in the 1970s. Breathable and waterproof HellyTech garments hit the market in 1980.

Helly Hansen jackets are easily recognizable – their iconic appearance has seen little need for change over time.
